Fundraising For Our Next Community
Would you help us? we are looking to raise £3,500 to be able to start our first group of 9 wanna-be poultry farmers. The beauty of this is that in one year the £3,500 will have been paid back so we can do it all again with a new group. This means your donation will be used over and over again!
Poultry Production
WayMaker believes it is essential for subsistence farmers not to put all their eggs into one basket. If possible, it is really important to diversify and broaden the farmers’ product range by selling chickens, maize, etc.
This is achieved by selling and rearing chickens as part of a cooperative, which generates additional cash to supplement their subsistence farming.
How It Works
This works by creating a cooperative of 9 people. Each investing £450.
It takes 8 weeks to mature day old chicks ready for sale.
One of the nine cooperative members is solely responsible for selling the mature chickens every week. The other eight people each rear a number of chicks on an eight-week cycle, with each person’s cycle one week behind the other. Thus, every week, one of the eight has mature chicks ready for sale.
The salesperson takes a pre-agreed percentage of sales, and the individual cooperative member takes the remainder of that week’s sales. That money is then divided into salary/profit, a small repayment of the start-up £450, and reinvestment into more day-old chicks and the feed needed to rear them to maturity in 8 weeks. And so the cycle continues.
Thus, after 12 months, the individual receives back their initial capital of £450 (or repays any loan or grant); they have been receiving income every two months throughout the year, and they have an ongoing and sustainable business going forward.
